Thoughts from Judy Sherry:
GAGV and the Elections-November 10, 2016
Educate Advocate Participate
I am quite sure most of us are shocked and dismayed by the results of Tuesday’s elections – both on the national and our state levels. It feels as if everything we have supported and worked for is now in jeopardy...and we are correct to worry about that.
HOWEVER, that is not a choice we can make for long. We must channel that worry into resolve to continue speaking out for what we know to be right, and to make our voices heard-- even when we fear they will fall on deaf ears. Additionally, we will need to regroup and consider new tactics to create an environment where our children and grandchildren can be safe. The following is an excerpt from States United, the group representing 31 states, including Missouri, through GAGV.
We will continue to work day in and day out to prevent irresponsible and dangerous gun laws from being enacted and reducing the epidemic of gun violence.
And so, we will join them and other groups to work to accomplish what we know must be done: keeping our children and our communities safe by supporting background checks and opposing all laws that make obtaining a firearm so very easy. We implore you to stand with us and participate as advocates for gun safety.
To that end, please plan to attend our December 5 meeting to learn about ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council), a secretive group that drafts legislation for states across the country. ALEC brings together major U.S. corporations and right-wing legislators to craft and vote on "model" bills behind closed doors. It has come under increasing scrutiny for its role in promoting "stand your ground" gun laws, voter suppression bills, union-busting policies and other controversial legislation.
